WOYWW: My Desk on Board the Treasure Junk

This was my desk yesterday.

I was on the deck of the Treasure Junk

on Halong Bay, Vietnam.

As it was early in the morning,

the crew was diligently cleaning 

and sprucing up the place.

I read about the widow who 

helped Elijah by sharing the little oil

and meager flour she had left.

But Elijah was a man of God

and when she helped him,

she too was able to eat for a year!

When we are generous,

when we open our heart and give,

you never know what can happen!

God's economy is different 

from the world's economy!

We went on a boat ride to visit

a Pearl farm and a floating village.

The people were very poor

as you can imagine.

Paddling the boat was backbreaking work.

Our boat woman was especially pitiful

as she was old and seemed miserable.

My brother Robert started drawing her

even if she would glance at him

with disapproval.

But when we came to a stop,

she pointed to his sketchbook,

and Robert gave her the sketch.

She proudly showed it to the other boat woman

and suddenly her face brightened with a big smile!

After that, instead of paddling with a sour face,

she was smiling, and had so much energy!!!

When we share our gifts with others,

we can brighten their day!

Vietnamese Dongs! 

It is worth P2060 or U$ 47.20.

Everyone is a millionaire in Vietnam!!!

We stayed for 2 nights in the New Vision Hotel

along Hang Bo in the Old Quarter.

To get to Room 304, you had to climb

6 flights of stairs!!!

No wonder it was super cheap

at $7.34 per person per night!

Staying in the Old Quarter was great though!

So many interesting places,

businesses, people....

There were always fresh flowers everywhere.

Motorcycles were ubiquitous too!

It was difficult to cross the streets 

if you were timid!

Somebody said there were 

5 million motorbikes in Hanoi!!!

I was fascinated with the little tea shops 

that sprouted in the sidewalks!

They would just spread out little plastic stools

and people would sit there relaxed 

as if they were in a Paris cafe!

Even foreigners would be unafraid to 

take tea or drip coffee,

unmindful that these places had

no running water to wash their cups!!!

The hustle and bustle of Hanoi stressed me out,

but as soon as we got to Halong Bay

for our 2 night tour, it was so relaxing.

We enjoyed the beautiful scenery of 

endless limestone pillars and isles,

and eagles flying above.

We had Tai chi in the morning,

and made spring rolls in the afternoon.

And after kayaking and swimming

there was a 5 course meal to sustain you!

Lots of shrimps and yummy salads!

And of course, my favorite-

spring rolls!

It was a great trip, a feast for the eyes, ears,

nose and mouth!

"Renew the face of the earth!" Psalm 104:34. 

Our Vietnamese guide said that Christianity 

was the only faith growing here in Vietnam! 

I thought that was great news especially 

as it was Pentecost Sunday. 

Sometimes the Spirit is a mighty wind 

but sometimes He is quietly 

changing hearts and minds. 

The Church is expanding 

almost everywhere today. 

Across the world, except in the 

Middle East, Europe and America, 

thousands come to Christ each day! 

More than 500 new churches are formed every day! 

Exciting times!
