Broken Cisterns

“They have dug themselves broken cisterns that hold no water.” Jeremiah 2:13

Of what use are broken cisterns? Of what use is a life that pursues the wrong purpose and meaning? I appreciate the craftsmanship of a well-made violin. The maker lovingly puts together the pieces, polishes it up, and makes sure all the sides and fittings are made of the right kind of wood, and that it plays with an even tone. Who would care if the purfling is inlaid or painted on? The good violin maker would know, and so would the eventual owner should a crack develop and the inlaid edge stops the crack from moving further into the body.

God, our creator, put even more care into making each human being. We are each infinitely precious to Him. So precious that He gave His ONLY begotten Son to die on the cross for each one of us. That is how much we are worth to Him. Anyone who belittles another person, who destroys a life, goes against God Himself. We have intrinsic worth that no one can take away from us.

Sometimes I watch a movie and I have no idea what it’s about. When I watched Inception a second time, I understood it better because I knew the ending. Knowing the ending certainly makes a difference.

God made sure we can know the ending when He gave us the Bible. We do not have to search for the meaning and the purpose of our life. We know that He has a plan for each one of us. We do not need to be broken cisterns, and all is never lost. He can repair us if we are broken. In the Bible, He has written His ongoing love story with us, and how we can be a part of that story. Our God is amazing!
