WOYWW: See Miracles Happen!

I am busy at work with some canvases
for an annual Art Fair,
If only I am not so sleepy at night!!!

"Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod." Mark 8:15
What is it about yeast that we have to be careful of it? Almost every time it is mentioned in the New Testament, 13 times by some accounts, it refers to corrupt doctrine or practice. Like the mustard seed it is small, but when you mix it with dough, the dough rises.
Jesus is warning His disciples that in their ministry, there is danger that slow, secret sin can seep in unobtrusively and slowly, secretly grow. The yeast is the little evil that can slowly, secretly grow in the dough, the people of God, until it corrupts and affects everything.

In our life, we have to be careful of this. Evil creeps in, even into our homes, through the TV, the internet, books, magazines, etc. How much more in our schools and offices? On the day before Ash Wednesday, it is a good thing to examine our attitudes, our way of thinking, the way we relate to others, our habits, what influences us, and see what areas we can open up to God. Usually it is what we need to hide that needs exposure to God's light. Is there an area in our life that we want to keep secret, hidden, that we are not proud of?
God wants to free us from the darkness of sin to bring us out into His wonderful, cleansing light! Let's take advantage of the grace-filled journey with God that is Lent!
""When you fast, don't make it obvious." Mt. 6:16
I don't know anyone who likes to fast. Every Lent I try to get out of it by doing variations of fasting. But fasting can bring breakthroughs or miracles and I'm in the mood for one right now. (I'm always in the mood for a miracle, aren't you?!!)
We watched the musical, "Into the Heights" last night. In the musical, there were several story lines where people desired a lot of things. One wanted to go back to the country where she was born. Another dreamed of escaping from the barrio to an apartment in the West Village. A father wanted to provide for a daughter's education. A couple was frustrated because they could not be together because of a father's disapproval.

All of us want something more of, or less of, or perhaps there's something we just can't break free of. And if it's been something we've wanted for years, perhaps it's time to consider that there are some things we can't get without God's power. In Mark 9:29, Jesus tells the disciples that a boy could not be freed from an evil spirit unless by prayer and fasting.
This Lent, let's think of something we want to change in our life, and let God do His work. Let us allow God to surprise us! If we fast and pray, we can see miracles happen!

  11. Welcome to Lent here, very apt thoughts as I am giving up my 'five minutes' catching up on mail before I lay down to sleep - changing it to a bit more Bible Reading and reflecting. I have been evangelising a bit more often lately and need to recharge my batteries so thought that this is a good time to start.
Praying for peace and strength in the coming week.

  12. I love the drawings you have added to your Bible - an interesting way to reflect and remember.
Thank you for the thoughtful words about "yeast" and about wanting things. I will consider these a bit, when I have some quiet moments.

  13. Thank you for your thoughts on 'yeast' and how that applies to us in our daily lives. I love your Bible art. It's great.
Fasting isn't so bad once you set your mind to it an start. I've done it a few times.
    Have a great week,
