WOYWW: God's Beloved!

 What's on my desk today?
A tutorial!
Many have asked how I do these colorful flowers
so I promised I would teach the technique.
It's quite easy and I have had many successful paint parties
where beautiful gardens bloomed.

"Because you are God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with heartfelt mercy, with kindness, humility, meekness, and patience." Colossians 3:12

If you were chosen to live in Downton Abbey, no doubt there would be changes in the way you dress and the way things are done. The upstairs family changed clothing several times a day. There was a proper way of speaking which was why Tom Branson was always in trouble. The Crawleys were always well behaved and treated the servants kindly.

WE are chosen. WE are holy, which means set apart. And WE are loved by our Father. But the clothes we are supposed to wear are not fancy, and dripping with lace and gems. They are 'clothes' of the heart. I think our life on earth is a training ground for when we get to heaven. We endure hardships so we can wear patience. We encounter aggravating people so we can put on meekness and kindness. When we notice people in need, we can practice mercy. These are the clothes we need when we get to our Father's home. Hopefully they are not threadbare but resplendent with a loving and generous heart!

I usually use wall putty (a cheaper alternative to gesso)
to cover book pages. These are from meditation books.
Catholics have daily readings,
and I do not like to throw away these pages
as it has the Word of God plus devotionals.
But through the years I have accumulated piles of it
and decided to use it for painting.

 So here are the instructions:

Make a mess with different acrylic paints.
Everyone knows how to make a mess, right?
And we love it too!
Someone said joyfully when I was teaching this,
"The messier, the better!"
Think- what colors would you like in your garden?
I am sure you would choose bright happy colors!

Then make marks on the painted background using
rubber stamps, bottle covers, bubble wrap, old placemats
with interesting textures, styrofoam, etc.
Put paint on the stamps then apply to the background.
It does not matter if the the marks are not perfect.
The more imperfect the better!

Make a draft of the words you want to put on your painting,
then use carbon paper (transfer paper)
to place it on the background.

Then using a permanent pen,
trace your letters on the background.

I use a Uniball Signo white pen (broad) to make the design
on the background.
You can use simple shapes like circles and ovals,
or you can draw complicated flowers by
looking at real ones and copying them.
It is best to fill almost every space
so you won't have too many white blank spaces.
Make sure that your stems have a thickness
and are not just thin lines or the stems will disappear.
You can also make houses, birds, butterflies, whatever makes you happy!

Then use white acrylic paint to cover the background.
Don't cover up the words.

After you have painted the background white,
put spots of colors on the flowers, leaves, etc.
This is just to put an accent on your flowers.

The last step would be to add "embroidery",
more details, using the same white pen.
There you have it!

Below are some of the work I have done using this technique.
It really is a lot of fun.
Don't give up if you don't get it the first time!

  12. This post is full of gorgeous project...Love the inking and the colors. So glad you joined our 200th Challenge at Word Art Wednesday last week. We have a new Challenge today and I hope you join us again. Leaving you with the inspiration of God's Word in Colossians 2:6-8 which says, "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ." Have a blessed day!
