“You are lacking in one thing.” Mark 10:21
I read about this “one thing” before in Luke 10:38-42. In the story of Martha and Mary, Jesus says that Martha lacks “one thing”. We see that Martha is too distracted with her chores and preparations to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to Him. Here in Mark 10, the eager young man allows his money to get in the way of following the Lord.
What is is that separates me from God? What He asks is actually very simple, to sit at His feet and listen to Him so we will know what He wants from us. Is it too much for us to give, to tarry with Him for a while? Our chores at home and our work in the office are never ending. We cannot wait for a “slow” day to visit with the Lord. By then it will be too late. We cannot wait until we have accumulated enough money to have the leisure to follow Him. Money beguiles and we see from some very very rich people, it is never enough. Love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
“For this shall every faithful man pray to You in time of stress, Though deep waters overflow, they shall not reach him.” Psalm 32:6. Let us not wait until deep waters of trial and tribulation overflow. Let us do the one thing, listen to Him and follow Him.
