The Prophet

The Word of the Lord came to Jonah saying “Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will give you.” Jonah 3:1

In a way each of us is a message to the world, aren’t we? When we are born, we are a sign of hope and expectation. We may not realize it but each of us are called to be prophets, to speak for God and proclaim God’s truth. In Old Testament times, a prophet would be like a watchman and warn the community of an invading army.

Today, there is so much danger all around and we do need prophets to warn us. Do we listen to God, read His Word, so we can live out our role as prophet? Or are we like Jonah who ran away from God and tried to hide. No one can hide from God.

The Bible is still relevant today. Just as God, through Jonah, warned the Ninevites of their impending destruction if they did not repent from their sinful ways, we will be held accountable even in these so-called modern times, for the many ways we go against God and go our own way. There are consequences to our actions. Jonah repented and finally delivered the message of judgement to Nineveh. The people believed the message, and everyone, from the King, to the lowliest person, turned from their evil ways.

We too need to repent. For not proclaiming the truth to a fallen world, for not repenting and turning to God. Is there someone who would benefit from a word of truth, encouragement, a reminder that God is waiting?
