Only the Lord

 “Only in God is my soul at rest; from Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed at all." Psalm 62:1-2

This reminds me of “Nada De Turbe”, St. Teresa de Avila's prayer:

"Let nothing disturb you,

Let nothing dismay you,

Everything passes,

God does not change.

Patience overcomes everything,

Who has God lacks nothing.

God alone suffices."

Yes, Lord, may nothing disturb me. May I be able to retreat with you, calm, knowing that You are in control, that there is nothing impossible with You! Even if there is turmoil all around, all this talk of the “Big One” and the need to prepare Go Bags and family reunification plans because of all the earthquakes recently. Add to that the uncertainty of having our Congressmen and Senators embroiled in systemic corruption, trillions in taxes stolen blatantly. Yet will I trust in You and be not disturbed.

Corrie Ten Boom who along with her family had been hiding Jews in their home in Holland, had been arrested by the Gestapo.  She was a prisoner for 11 months, 4 of those months she was kept in solitary confinement in Scheveningen prison. Then she was transferred to Vught concentration camp and eventually to the dreaded Ravensbrück in northern Germany where her sister Betsie died. 

“I couldn’t have done it myself,” Corrie shared. “Only the Lord carried me through. I had always believed in Him. But now I know from experience that Jesus' light is stronger than the darkest night. I had my Bible with me. And in it, I read that even the hairs on our head are numbered. God holds the universe and the smallest details in His hands. That gave me peace- He had not forgotten me.” 

He will not forget us either. As it says in Deuteronomy 31:8, “The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."
