Are Miracles Possible?

“Is anything too marvelous for the Lord to do?” Genesis 18:14

Miracles, are they possible? We are so skeptical in this day and age that many discount miracles. But if we are Christians, we have to believe in supernatural occurrences, for of all the Church’ teachings none is more unbelievable than the resurrection! Why do we believe that Jesus rose from the dead? This is central to our faith. We cannot be a Christian if we think this is a fairy tale.

Jesus foretold that He would rise again on the third day after His death. There are more than five passages in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, where He declares this. “From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day.” (Matthew 16:21)

After he died, there was obviously a high impact, dramatic event that empowered Jesus’ disciples to overcome their fear and obey Jesus’ instruction to spread His teachings. They were even willing to be tortured, imprisoned and to die courageously for what they knew to be true. And what they knew was the tomb was empty! The location where Jesus was buried was widely attested in many biblical and non-biblical sources. If Jesus’ body could be found, Jesus’ enemies would have paraded it around the streets of Jerusalem to stop the fantastical stories circulating after the crucifixion.

Who found the empty tomb? The women! If the story had been invented, they would never have used women as witnesses for women were not considered to be reliable witnesses in first-century Jewish culture. It’s quite embarrassing for the gospel writers to admit that the women were braver and more committed than the men!

You probably know all these but it does no harm to hammer the truths into our brain so we don’t get complacent about our faith!
