DIY Weekend: Mrs. Whatsit

I like to recycle, or upcycle,
as we prefer to call it now.
Would you like to make
your own Mrs. Whatsit?

First, assemble the materials.
Mrs. Whatsit is made out of a plastic bottle,
newspaper strips, laundry starch,
the round dome that covers my favorite KFC Krusher
yogurt drink (use any dome shaped cover!),
and scrap cloth, lace, buttons, etc..
You will also need masking tape,
and carbon paper, a pencil,
acrylic paints, a paint brush, and a glue gun.

As I didn't know what I was making,
I did this the hard way.
It's best if you already make the form,
attaching the head,
before putting newspaper dipped in
laundry starch over the form.

Here is the cover of the KFC Krusher
which I attached to the plastic bottle
using masking tape.

Cover the form with the paper mache.

Here is how I made the arms-
I just rolled some newspaper the length
of the arms, held it together with masking tape,
then covered it with paper mache.
Then I bent it a bit and put
masking tape to hold the shape.

Dry this very well.
It will take a day or even more,
unless you put it under the sun.

Cover the face and hands
with wall putty or gesso.

Draw the face on paper.

Then trace your drawing on to
your gessoed face with carbon paper.

Here she is!

I used acrylic paints for her face and hands.

Now for the fun part.
I always like rummaging through my stash
to choose what fabrics I will use for
dressing up my doll.

Use a glue gun to attach Mrs. Whatsit's clothes.
You can also use needle and thread of course,
if that's what you prefer!

Use a glue gun to attach
her sleeves.

And be sure to put some lace to cover
the frayed edges!

Put on her arms (using a glue gun, of course!)

Embellish her dress with some lace, buttons,
ribbon, or whatever you like!!!

I didn't find any yarn or rope
so I decided to cut up an old sweater.
But you can use all sorts of
materials for hair!
Once I tore a chambray shirt into strips
and used that!
To attach hair, I used my trusty old
glue gun! So easy!
I am sooo happy with how
she turned out!
You can also make her
into a bank by making a slit
in the plastic bottle.
Then don't close up
the back of her dress,
so you can slip the coins in!

Paint Party Friday: Troubles into Joy!

When I was pregnant, I was filled with anxiety.
I was 38 years old, it was my first time
and I entertained fears about whether my baby
would be born normal.
I had spotting, pre-eclampsia, and
pains in my pelvic region.
And the baby would have spasms of what would
turn out to be bouts of hiccups.

Because of my anxiety, I would nag God,
"pray without ceasing".
Then I felt God say to me,
"Patsy, when you hold your baby
in your arms,
you will know how much I love you."
True enough, my delivery was quick,
almost painless.

When Joshua arrived, he had a big nose
and even bigger ears.
My mom was so dismayed that she nagged God
to make Joshua cute.
And Josh was the cutest baby ever!

There are many times in our life that give us
anxiety, fear, grief, or pain.
We go through many challenges.
But if we HOPE in God, 'pray without ceasing',
and trust that God always
wants the best for us,
ALL our troubles will turn into JOY!

"When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish
because her hour has arrived;
but when she has given birth to a child,
she no longer remembers the pain
because of her joy that a
child has been born into the world"
John 16:20-23

Jesus said to His disciples,
"A little while and you will no longer see me,
and again a little while later and you will see me."
John 16:16

Jesus and His disciples certainly
had some strange conversations!
But after He died and appeared to them,
some of those conversations became clearer.

I miss my mom very much, but that
is tempered by knowing I will see her again.
How terribly desolate I would be if
I did not have this reassurance!

But we do not have to wait to be with Jesus!
We can be with Him all the time!
He left us the Spirit to be with us always!
"And surely I am with you always,
to the very end of the age."
Matthew 28:20

We just need
to spend time with Him and
not be so enamored of the things
this world has to offer!
We can't "see and hear" Him
if we don't turn off the noises,
the clamoring of this world,
the urgent call of
the long list of things to do!

WOYWW: Give Him Praise!

Happy 5th Anniversary to all my
friends from all over the world!
On my desk, I'm starting a new commission.

I spent the weekend making ATCs.
If anyone wants to swap, you can
leave me your email address in the comments.
Sorry, WOYWWers,
this post is super long, but I get so
excited about what I read about in the Bible!

These days I've been reading about Saint Paul.
He was a magnificent personality!
Quite funny that I chose to make Rand Paul
into Saint Paul because Time Magazine
describes him as a man with
a "missionary zeal"!!!

"What therefore you unknowingly worship,
I proclaim to you, the God who made the world
and all that is in it, the Lord of Heaven and Earth...
He fixed the ordered seasons...
so that people might seek God,
even perhaps grope for Him and find Him,
though indeed He is not far from any one of us."
Acts 17:23-27

Paul said these words in Athens where he noticed
so many temples dedicated to idols.
One altar caught his eye, an altar
TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.

Creation is God's first missionary.
All of creation shouts out about
God's majesty and power!
“Ever since the creation of the world his eternal power and divine nature, invisible though they are, have been understood and seen through the things he has made. So they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20)

"For ever since the world was created,
people have seen the earth and sky.
Through everything God made,
they can clearly see his invisible qualities--
his eternal power and divine nature.
So they have no excuse for not knowing God."
Romans 1:20

 “Men go abroad to wonder
at the heights of mountains,
at the huge waves of the sea,
at the long courses of the rivers,
at the vast compass of the ocean,
at the circular motions of the stars,
and they pass by themselves without wondering.”
St. Augustine

We, our human body, our minds, our soul,
are God's greatest miracles!

I can't say it better than Louie Giglio in this video.

It's worth watching!
At the end of the video he talks about
how we are "fearfully and wonderfully made"
Psalm 139:14,
how we are made of 75 trillion cells,
and that every 3 seconds,
50,000 cells die and are replaced by brand new cells!
And how LAMININE, a cell adhesion molecule
looks like this under a microscope-

THIS is what holds our cells together,
our body together!

It's in the form of a cross!
God left His signature on our bodies!
Isn't that usually what an artist does?

"About midnight, while Paul and Silas
were praying and singing hymns to God
as the prisoners listened,
there was suddenly such a severe earthquake
that the foundations of the jail shook..."
Acts 16:25-26

During his ministry, Saint Paul spent
more than 5 years in prison.
Like him, we should learn to praise
and thank God wherever we are,
in whatever circumstance.
Praise and thanksgiving changes our minds,
our attitudes, even changes circumstances!
Like shouts of praise brought down
the walls of Jericho, thanksgiving
can dismantle strongholds,
and causes chains to be broken.

I remember when the management
in a mall where we had a store,
were determined to get us out because we
did not have high sales like the other
brand name shops they preferred.
But it was one of our best stores,
and it would be very bad for our bottom line
if we lost our space!
So I walked around the store
7 or more times and praised God!
Well, we still have our space,
and in a better location than before!!!

I think about David and why God loved him
so much even if he sinned many times.
Perhaps it is because he had a wonderful
relationship with His Father!
God called David "a man after my own heart",
and David composed many wonderful songs
and danced for God. Even if people
thought he was crazy!

Knowing God should lead us to praise and worship.
Otherwise we would be just like the devil.
The devil knows God and knows with conviction
who Jesus is, even more than we do,
BUT chooses not to worship God.

Let our knowledge about who God is to us
travel from our mind down to our heart!
Give Him the praise He deserves!!!

Blessings!
