The Master Knitter

“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb.” Psalm 139:13

I know very few people who knit. In today’s fast paced world, it takes a very special person to appreciate this slow, calming, rhythmic hobby. A knitting expert says that even the most complex knitting patterns are repetitive, based on combining two stitches—knit and purl. Indeed since the 70s and 80s, countless artists have knitted art forms and blanketed trees, bicycles, and other shapes with their knits and purls.

The original “knitter”, if there is such a word, is God. He knit us carefully in our mother’s womb. We too are a work of art, and just as it is barbaric to destroy an artist’s masterpiece, it is unthinkable that abortion is actually protected by law in some parts of the world.

The making of a baby is magical and awesome and mysterious. Science can study and explain what happens inside the womb, but no one on earth can create a baby out of nothing. Only God can. Scientists are experimenting with creating embryos from skin cells and maybe one day they will be able to, but the building blocks come from God. All of us, each one of us, come from God’s creative hand. Each one of us is His masterpiece, loved and carefully knit together. Let us see each other as brothers and sisters. Let us value one another as God values and loves us.
